Accessibility statement for Choose My Police & Crime Commissioner (CMPCC)
The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government is committed to making the Choose My Police & Crime Commissioner (CMPCC) website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
This accessibility statement applies to CMPCC only. It does not cover other Digital Electoral Services (DES) such as service subdomains (for example, registertovote.service.gov.uk), which have their own accessibility statements.
Compliance status
CMPCC is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and out of scope exemptions listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:
- some parts of the site have content presented in incorrect HTML, which may negatively impact the information relayed to screen readers. This fails WCAG success criterion 1.3.1 (Info & Relationships).
- the site’s search box (postcode, candidate name, police force area) is structured incorrectly, which may negatively impact the information relayed to screen readers. This fails WCAG success criteria 1.3.1 (Info & Relationships) and 2.4.6 (Headings & Labels).
- it’s not possible to view the screen on a mobile or tablet without scrolling horizontally as well as vertically. This fails WCAG success criterion 1.4.10 (Reflow).
- some sections of the site have a poor contrast ratio when selected as the main focus. This fails WCAG success criterion 1.4.11 (Non-Text Contrast).
- when using the ‘skip to main content’ function, this feature carries over to any subsequent page on the site. This fails WCAG success criterion 2.4.3 (Focus Order).
- some buttons on the site have functions that may be unclear to a screen reader when viewed out of context. This fails WCAG success criterion 2.4.6 (Headings & Labels).
- the focus is lost when navigating to the CMPCC logo via keyboard. This fails WCAG success criterion 2.4.7 (Focus Visible).
- the focus becomes hidden when navigating out of the cookie consent banner. This fails WCAG success criterion 2.4.11 (Focus Not Obscured).
- some instances of the site have HTML applied to incompatible elements which could negatively impact the information relayed to screen readers. This fails WCAG success criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value).
Disproportionate burden
As Police & Crime Commissioners are to be abolished, we’re currently carrying out a disproportionate burden assessment on the site. This may mean that we will not have to fix the issues listed above.
We’re planning to complete the assessment by 31 July 2026, and if we do not plan to fix the issues, we’ll say why.
You’ll still be able to contact us for help with any accessibility issues you encounter whilst CMPCC remains a live digital service.
Out of scope
The following content is not within scope of the accessibility regulations:
- any brochures containing candidate information you may request through CMPCC during a Police & Crime Commissioner election, as this is printed media.
Preparation of this accessibility statement
This statement was prepared on 9 June 2026. It was last reviewed on 18 June 2026.
CMPCC was last tested on 2 March 2026 against the WCAG 2.2 AA standard. This was carried out by the Digital Accessibility Centre (DAC).
